The Marketing Department of One
One accountable human runs a forward-deployed workforce of twelve named marketing agents over one shared memory. Positioning, category and earned media stay with the human. Everything else is platformed and runs through the workforce. Nothing runs unattended. We call this human a Marketing Forward Deployed Engineer, an M-FDE: a software first CMO.
Get early accessWhat is a Marketing Forward Deployed Engineer (M-FDE)?
A Marketing Forward Deployed Engineer, or M-FDE, is the one accountable human who runs a company's marketing function through a deployed workforce of AI agents. This is the job of a software first CMO. The human keeps every judgment call: positioning, category, earned media. The agents execute research, content, brand and web work under a shared memory and a quality gate.
The problem is not unproductive marketers
A new company does not fail at marketing because the founder writes bad copy at night. It fails because a marketing organization cannot be hired at the speed the company moves. The first marketing hire takes months to find, longer to ramp, and leaves with the playbook in their head when they go.
Every AI marketing vendor sells tools for a team, and their pricing depends on the team existing: seats, hubs, licenses. None of them can say the team itself is the cost problem, because the team is their revenue.
Two jobs, not one
Marketing splits into two kinds of work. One kind can be written down, run by software, and improved every time it runs: research, content, brand execution, the website, AI-search measurement. The other kind stays artisanal: positioning, category creation, and the endorsement of others, the press coverage and word of mouth no software can manufacture.
Codify the first kind into a framework of skills, and the improvements stop living in one person's head and start living in the platform. Every gain compounds and ships to every deployment. The software first CMO runs that platform: the Marketing FDEs, and the quality gate that keeps them honest.
The second kind stays the founder's job, or a growth CMO's: decide what category to win, hold the position, earn the coverage no agent can ask for on your behalf.
OpenAI and Anthropic forward-deploy engineers to make their models work inside customer companies. Palantir did the same with human engineers before them. Tabula Rasa runs the pattern in reverse: we forward-deploy the marketers, and the marketers are software.

named marketing roles, one shared memory
The roster runs this company's own go-to-market today. This site, the specification behind it and the decision archive are the artifact.

What we are not saying
Not autonomous marketing. Not set and forget. Not a replacement for your judgment, only for the organization you would otherwise have to hire to execute it.
